The International Center for Professional Development (ICPD), with the support of the Fund for Armenian Relief (FAR), is pleased to organize the 3rd Postgraduate Medical Education Conference in honor of the late Dr. Aram Chobanian, a pioneer in advancing healthcare education in Armenia. 

OBJECTIVES: This virtual conference will explore innovative approaches that are transforming postgraduate medical education. Through expert presentations, interactive discussions, and networking opportunities, participants will learn about emerging educational technologies and teaching strategies, including artificial intelligence, simulation-based learning, extended reality (XR), adaptive learning platforms, and digital educational resources. The conference aims to provide practical insights into the implementation of these innovations to enhance learner engagement, improve educational outcomes, and support lifelong learning. Participants will gain valuable knowledge and tools to optimize training programs and prepare healthcare professionals for the evolving demands of modern medicine.

Dr. Gevorg Yaghjyan, MD, PhD

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Dr. Gevorg Yaghjyan is a specialist in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery with an impressive professional following. In addition to his own full time surgical practice, Dr. Yaghjyan offers his expertise as a consulting surgeon to the leading general and sub-specialty surgeons in Armenia and Karabakh. Former Vice Rector of the Postgraduate and Continuing Medical Education at Yerevan State Medical University from 2007-20011 (YSMU), he is Associate Professor at the university Hospital’s at Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.  In 2010 he was awarded the Gold Medal for Excellence in Teaching from Yerevan State Medical University (devoted to 90 anniversaries).  In 2011 Dr. Yaghjyan was honored with the Drastamat Kanaian Gold Medal from the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia. Over the past 10 years, Gevorg Yaghjyan took active part in educational and professional training programs at renowned medical centers and universities around the world— University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, Cornell University, University of Salzburg, among them. In 2008, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Yale University, which he has had to postpone due to the extraordinary demands of his thriving surgical practice and teaching commitments. In 2013 he was again awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in Boston University Medical School. Dr. Yaghjyan served as Director of Medical Programs at the National Competitiveness Foundation of Armenia and as Acting Director of the Isotope Production Center in Armenia from start to completion from 2011-2015.

Dr. Abdelrahman Adly, MD, MSc, MRCS

Paediatric Surgery

Dr. Abdelrahman Adly, MD, MSc, MRCS is a Paediatric Surgery Registrar in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) and Global Physicians Lead at AMBOSS. He received his medical degree from Ain Shams University, followed by a Master’s degree in General Surgery and postgraduate training in Paediatric Surgery. He also holds membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS). Dr. Adly is passionate about medical education and advancing innovative, evidence-based learning for healthcare professionals worldwide.

Dr. Ara Tekian, PhD, MHPE

Professor of Medical Education

Ara Tekian, PhD, MHPE is Professor of Medical Education, and the Associate Dean for the Office of International Education at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago. He is involved in teaching courses in both the master’s and the doctorate programs in Professions Education. He is a leading scholar in professions education with significant and sustained research contributions that have made groundbreaking and longstanding impact on educational practices of health professionals, both within the United States and around the world. His research has vastly improved standards for educational practice and training of health professionals and transformed international guidelines that have direct consequences on the quality of patient safety and public good. Overall, Ara has published over 190 peer-reviewed journal articles and presented over 150 peer-reviewed presentations. He teaches widely, conducting over 325 invited workshops and courses, and 275 invited presentations, in over 45 countries. In July 2012, the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) conferred its ASME Gold Medal to Ara, in recognition of his scholarship and leadership in international contexts. In 2017, Ara received the prestigious AERA Division I Distinguished Career Award. He was also the 2017 recipient of the highly acclaimed Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Dr. Tekian is also the Editor-in-Chief for the Innovation and Change in Professional Education (ICPE) Book Series, published by Springer that has over 20 books in the series; and serves on many editorial boards.

Dr. David B. Pearlstone, MD MBA

Surgical Oncology

Dr. Pearlstone is a founder/principal and CEO of DICOM Director. LLC, as well as a founder and principal at Voxelary Research, Inc. Prior to that, Dr. Pearlstone had a long career in academic medicine, previously serving as Medical Director for Vitas Healthcare of Connecticut, Assistant Professor of Surgery at Yale School of Medicine, Director of Breast Services at Hackensack University Medical Center, and Associate Chairman of Surgery, Chief of Surgical Oncology, and Director of Surgical Research at Lincoln Hospital in New York City. Dr. Pearlstone graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and received his BSc. with Honors from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Following a research fellowship at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Vanderbilt, he received his MD from New York University in 1989. He completed his residency in general surgery at NYU, including two years as a Clinical Research Fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. He then went on to complete a clinical fellowship in surgical oncology at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Dr. Pearlstone is widely published in the medical literature. Dr. Pearlstone has worked in biomedical technology transfer since 2002, serving on the faculty of Clemson University College of Engineering in Clemson, SC, and the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. In 2010, Dr. Pearlstone received his MBA from the Leadership in Healthcare program at the Yale University School of Management.

Dr. David L. Battinelli, MD

Internal Medicine

Dr. David L. Battinelli is Executive Vice President and Physician-in-Chief of Northwell Health and Dean of the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. A board-certified internist and founding member of the Zucker School of Medicine, he has held numerous leadership positions in academic medicine, medical education, research, and clinical affairs. Dr. Battinelli has extensive experience in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, continuing medical education, curriculum development, and faculty development. He previously served as Vice Dean and Dean for Medical Education at the Zucker School of Medicine and held senior academic and clinical leadership positions at Northwell Health and Boston Medical Center. A past president of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine, Dr. Battinelli has contributed to numerous national medical organizations and is a recognized speaker and author on medical education, clinical teaching, and faculty development.

Dr. Edouard Aboian, MD

Vascular Surgery

Edouard Aboian, MD, is a vascular surgeon who specializes in clinical vascular surgery and surgical education. Edouard Aboian graduated from Kuban State Medical Academy in 2001 and came to US for advanced research and clinical training. He completed his General Surgery residency at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in 2011 and proceeded with advanced training in vascular surgery at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Following completion of vascular training Dr. Aboian spent 8 years in Private Practice in Bay Area, California. He joined Yale Medical School as a faculty in 2020 to advance clinical and educational research. Dr. Aboian’s interests focus on innovative technologies and their application to clinical vascular practice and resident education. Specifically, he is involved in clinical trials related to limb preservation and application of new technologies to clinical practice and education. His recent work is related to Spatial Computing and its application to anatomy education.

Dr. Guzel Ulumbekova, MD, MBA

Public Health

Dr. Guzel Ulumbekova, MD, MBA is a healthcare management expert and Director of the High School of Healthcare Organization and Management (VSHOUZ-KMK). She holds an MBA in Healthcare Management from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. In 1994, she founded GEOTAR-Media, Russia’s leading medical publishing company, which she headed until 2006. She later served as Senior Advisor to the Governor of Samara Region on healthcare management and Executive Secretary of the Commission that developed Russia’s 2020 Healthcare Development Concept. In 2015, Dr. Ulumbekova founded VSHOUZ-KMK, a leading scientific, educational and expert center in healthcare management. Since 2013, she has also been actively involved in the development of continuous medical education and healthcare policy in Russia. She is the author of the monograph Healthcare in Russia: How to Cope with the Current Challenges and has received several national awards, including Gratitude from the President of the Russian Federation.

Dr. Jaideep Talwalkar, MD

Internal Medicine and Pediatrics

Dr. Jaideep Talwalkar, MD is a physician and Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine. He provides primary care for patients of all ages as well as specialty care for adults with cystic fibrosis. In addition to seeing patients, he teaches medical students and residents at Yale and develops curricula for medical education. As Associate Dean for Educational Technology and Innovation, he partners with faculty, staff, and trainees to brainstorm and implement technologic solutions to improve medical education. As Director of Clinical Skills, he oversees the teaching of fundamental bedside skills to Yale medical students. He also edits and administers the Yale Primary Care Pediatrics Curriculum (pcpc.yale.edu), a guide for pediatric teaching used by pediatricians nationwide. When not at work, he spends time with family and seeks any opportunity to play ultimate frisbee.

Dr. Ximena Alvira, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist and Clinical & Research Manager at Elsevier Health, with more than 25 years of experience spanning clinical medicine, neuroscience research, medical writing, and healthcare innovation. She advises healthcare organizations worldwide on the evaluation and implementation of evidence-based clinical technologies, including artificial intelligence. Lynn Kysh, MLIS, MPP

Health Sciences Library

Lynn Kysh is a health sciences librarian with over a decade of experience which has included working in the academic setting at the University of Southern California and the clinical setting as the solo librarian at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). She received her Master of Library & Information Science from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2012 and her Master of Public Policy from the same institution in 2020. Lynn currently leads the Research and Health Sciences team of librarians and library staff that provides specialized research guidance to faculty, graduate students and other researchers across UC Davis and UC Davis Health. The department supports One Health education and clinical scholarship, and operates Blaisdell Medical Library. Her professional interests include improving the quality of evidence syntheses, contributing to clinical informatics training in low- and middle-income countries, and promoting clinician wellbeing through the incorporation of the arts and humanities in education and practice.
