Updates on Pediatric Surgery Dedicated to the Memory of Professor Albert Vanyan

The International Center for Professional Development (ICPD) is cognizant of its duty to honor those who made substantial contributions to advancement of healthcare and medical education in Armenia. The ICPD is proud to be the organizer of the Virtual Symposium on Updates on Pediatric Surgery, dedicated to Professor of Pediatric Surgery, Dr. Albert Vanyan, who stood at the origins of the formation of modern pediatric surgery in Armenia since 1965. He had a great contribution to the formation of children's surgical services (general surgery, thoracic surgery, neonatal surgery, urology, orthopedics and traumatology, neurosurgery) in the country, working at the newly established Yerevan Children's Hospital (now the Surb Astvatsamayr Medical Center), where he worked until the end of his surgical and teaching career. He passed away in summer of 2022 at his 90th.  

Updates on Pediatric Surgery is designed for both practicing, in-training pediatric surgeons, general surgeons and non-surgical physicians interested in the pediatric surgical field. This online webinar will be conducted by collaboration of pediatric surgeons from Washington DC and Armenia.

This comprehensive series will cover updates in the treatment of common pediatric surgical problems, the latest surgical techniques and innovative procedures, including minimally invasive surgery as well as the management of other pediatric surgical diseases.

Leading experts will discuss the management and treatment options from a pediatric surgical perspective. This series assists in decision-making for multiple areas of pediatric surgical practice. The subject matter selected is a cross-section of the cutting-edge surgical practice of today and new developments in pediatric surgical field.

The intention of the program is to increase knowledge of pediatric surgical disease, to analyze the result of new approaches or techniques for managing disease and to examine new concepts in surgical science. The intended result of this activity is increased knowledge, performance, competence, skill and enhanced patient care regarding pediatric surgical disease, analyzing new approaches or techniques for managing disease and examining new concepts in the pediatric surgical science.

Dr. Nikolay Dallakyan, MD, PhD

Dr. Nikolay Dallakyan, MD, PhD, is a pediatric surgeon and the Director of “Sourb Astvatsamayr” Medical Centre in Yerevan. He received his medical degree at Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi at the faculty of pediatrics. He did his residency in pediatric surgery at YSMU, after which he worked as a surgeon on duty at Children's Hospital № 4. His PhD training was at the Central Moscow Institute for Physicians Qualification Improvement and his PhD topic was "Central and peripheral hemodynamic disorders and their correction in children during intestinal obstruction”. Dr. Dallakyan was continuously trained in pediatric surgery at different clinics: National Hospital of Norway in Oslo; University Hospital Münster, Germany; Utrecht in Holland, Hospital La Timone (Marseille), and in N13 Children's Hospital after N.F. Filatov, Moscow. Since 1984 started working at the Department of Pediatric Surgery as an assistant at YSMU, where he works till now as an Associate Professor. Besides, he has an experience working in government agencies: head of health department of Yerevan Municipality, chief pediatric surgeon of the city of Yerevan; chief pediatric surgeon of the Ministry of Health. Dr. Dallakyan has an extensive experience in neonatal surgery, especially in abdominal and anorectal malformations. He has also huge experience in pediatric emergency surgery, in redo surgeries.

Prof. Ara BABLOYAN, MD, PhD

Pediatric Surgery, Public Health

Prof. Ara BABLOYAN, MD, PhD, is a public health expert in Armenia. He is the Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Surgery of Yerevan State Medical University since 1997. Dr. Babloyan is the founder and the Scientific Director of ARABKIR Medical Center-Institute of Child and Adolescent Health, which is the largest pediatric multidisciplinary institution in the country. After graduation from the faculty of Pediatrics of Yerevan State Medical Institute he continued his postgraduate education in pediatric surgery in Moscow and St. Petersburg, where he got his PhD degree. Thanks to continuous training in renal transplant in Belgium and Switzerland he founded the organ transplantation program in Armenia. He was the President of the National Assembly/Parliament of the Republic of Armenia after leaving the Chairman position of its Standing Committee on Health Care, Maternity and Childhood. He was the Minister of Health of Armenia from 1991 to1997. Prof. Babloyan has a long experience working with World Health Organization (WHO) being a member of the Standing Committee of the Regional Committee for Europe (WHO); a member of the Technical Steering Committee on Child and Adolescent Health (WHO) and a member of the WHO Executive Board. He is the author and co-author of 3 scientific discoveries, 8 monographs and over 235 publications.

Dr. Alexandra Espinel, MD, is an assistant professor of pediatrics and otolaryngology at Children’s National Hospital and George Washington University. She is a graduate of the Children’s National Pediatric Otolaryngology Fellowship program. She currently serves as the director of the ACGME accredited Pediatric Otolaryngology Fellowship at Children’s National. Dr. Espinel treats patients in all aspects of pediatric ENT with a special interest in treating children with masses of the head and neck and disorders of the salivary glands. She also sees patients for surgical management of oromotor and swallowing dysfunction.

Dr. Andrew Matisoff, MD

Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology

Dr. Andrew Matisoff, MD, am pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist in the Division of Anesthesiology, Sedation and Perioperative Medicine within the Joseph E. Robert, Jr. Center for Surgical Care at Children’s National. His clinical interest lies in caring for children with congenital heart disease undergoing various procedures. His research interest is in patients with Williams Syndrome, and finding ways to make anesthesia safer in these high risk patients. He is also interested in device development and testing, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and ultrasound guided procedures. He has several current IRB approved studies testing POCUS in children.

Dr. Anthony Sandler, MD

Pediatric Surgery

Anthony Sandler, MD, is the Senior Vice President and Surgeon-in-Chief of the Joseph E. Robert Jr., Center for Surgical Care at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. He is the Diane and Norman Bernstein Chair in Pediatric Surgery and a Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at George Washington University. He is also principal investigator in the Immunology Initiative of the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation. Dr. Sandler's research interests include tumor immunology and tumor vaccine therapy, as well as the application of novel devices and technologies in surgical practice. Dr. Sandler is internationally known for his work on childhood solid tumors and operative repair of certain congenital anomalies. He has served on multiple committees for the American Association of Pediatric Surgery and has also served on several committees of the Children’s Oncology Group. He is currently on the Board of Examiners for the Pediatric Surgery Qualifying examination. Dr. Sandler’s research interests focus on solid tumors of childhood, in which his current research in tumor immunology investigates immunotherapeutic vaccine strategies. He has co-developed a surgical polymer sealant that is funded by the NIH and is currently in pre-clinical trials. Dr. Sandler has over 100 peer-reviewed publications in clinical and scientific medical journals.

Dr. Arman Harutyunyan, MD, PhD, is a pediatric surgeon at the Children's University Hospital “Muratsan” and the Head of Academic Program (the Assistant Professor and Lecturer) at the Chair of Pediatric Surgery of Yerevan State Medical University. The title of his thesis for the postgraduate doctoral degree of PhD in Medical Sciences “The effectiveness of a multi-modal enteral medication regimen resulted in the reduction of neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) associated morbidity, surgical complications, and mortality”.  Dr. Harutyunyan is the author of 31 articles published in different local and international scientific journals.

Dr. Ashot Kurghinyan, MD

Dr. Ashot Kurghinyan, MD, is a pediatric surgeon and the Deputy Director of Surgery at ARMENIA Medical Centre in Yerevan. He received his medical degree at Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi in the faculty of pediatrics. He passed his clinical residency in pediatric surgery at YSMU, at the ARABKIR Medical Center. He started his working experience as a pediatric surgeon in his hometown Gyumri, at the Austrian Children's Hospital, later becoming head of the same department. His experience in the medical sphere was also enriched with administrative and organizational work while successfully implementing the role of the Executive Director of the Austrian Children's Hospital for more than 15 years. His administrative work has always been accompanied by practical medical activities, professional training, and an exchange of experience. Dr. Kurghinyan is also specialized in general and endoscopic surgery and underwent professional training at the National Health Institute of Armenia, as well as attended multiple pieces of training and specialization courses in Tübingen(Germany) and Scheibbs, Feldkirch(Austria).

Dr. Chima Oluigbo, MD, FRCSC, is an attending neurosurgeon at Children’s National Hospital and an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine. He specializes in the surgical care of children with epilepsy as well as pediatric functional and restorative neurosurgery. Dr. Christina Feng, MD, is a pediatric surgeon specializing in general pediatric and thoracic surgery in infants, children and adolescents. She attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for college with a degree in chemical engineering and received her medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. Davit Dallakyan, MD, PhD is a pediatric surgeon at “St. Astvatsamayr” Medical Centre in Yerevan. He received his medical degree at Yerevan State Medical University. His residency program was in the department of Pediatric Surgery of “Sourb Astvatsamayr” Medical Centre. His research for PhD degree was done for “Thoracoscopic thymectomy for Myasthenia Gravis in Children”. During his career he was trained in several clinics around the world: 6 months observership for liver transplant and hepatobiliary surgery in USC University hospital, Los Angeles, USA.; 2 years training for thoracic surgery in “N13 Clinic after N. Filatov”, Moscow, Russia; 2 months observership for surgical oncology in Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York; 1 Month observership for surgical oncology in LMU clinic, Munich, Germany; 1 Month observership for airway surgery in Necker Children’s Clinic, Paris, France; 1 month observership for pediatric surgery in La Timone Hospital Marseille France; 1 month observership of mother and child healthcare in Kanazawa, Japan. Dr. Evan P. Nadler, MD, serves as co-director of the Obesity Program and is the director of the Child and Adolescent Weight Loss Surgery Program at Children’s National Hospital. He is also a tenured Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences. Before moving to Washington, D.C., he was the director of Minimally Invasive Pediatric Surgery at the New York University School of Medicine where he participated in U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved studies using laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding in adolescents with obesity. His current research pursuits include obesity treatment development, bariatric surgery for genetic obesity and adipocyte signaling via exosomes. Dr. Nadler is an international leader in the field of adolescent obesity, has multiple publications on the topic and was one of the founding members of the Childhood Obesity Committee of the American Pediatric Surgery Association.

Dr. Randall Burd, MD, PhD

Pediatric surgery

Dr. Randall Burd, MD, PhD, is a pediatric surgeon and chief of the Division of Trauma and Burn Surgery at Children’s National Hospital. He leads the Trauma Program at Children’s National, a Level I (highest level) pediatric trauma center designated by the American College of Surgeons, the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia. Dr. Burd’s areas of research interest are in developing new approaches for improving teamwork during the initial management and treatment of injured patients. For the past 15 years, Dr. Burd has led a multidisciplinary research team studying errors and teamwork in trauma resuscitation, including collaborators in emergency medicine and surgery, human factors, informatics, computer science and biomedical engineering. His research in trauma resuscitation is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Sergey Babloyan, MD, PhD, is a pediatric surgeon at ARABKIR Medical Center in Yerevan. He received his medical degree at Yerevan State Medical University. He did his residency program at the Pediatric Urology department of ARABKIR Medical Center at the same time working as a doctor’s assistant at the hospital ICU. The major achievement of his medical career is performing renal transplantation, which he is doing with much success for years. Moreover, his PhD research was done on his own experience in the field. Dr. Babloyan has actively participated in a number of congresses, seminars and conferences, whilst presenting his scientific articles, abstracts and presentations. Being very interested in medicine and focused on his development Dr. Babloyan continuously passed trainings at various medical institutions in Europe. He did internal medicine at the Hospital of Canton Jura, Switzerland, cardiovascular and visceral surgery at the University Hospital of Geneva, Switzerland, pediatric surgery and urology at the Debrousse Hospital in Lyon, France, endocrine surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, kidney and liver transplantation at the University Hospital of Antwerp, Belgium.

Dr. Timothy Kane, MD, serves as Division Chief of General and Thoracic Surgery and Program Director of the Pediatric Surgery Fellowship Program in the Joseph E. Robert, Jr., Center for Surgical Care. Dr. Vahe Kharatyan, MD, is a general and pediatric anesthesiologist and ICU doctor at ARABKIR Medical Center. He received his medical education at Yerevan State Medical University. He completed a clinical residency at the Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Unit of ARABKIR Medical Center. Dr. Vahe Yavryan, MD

Dr. Vahe Yavryan, MD, is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and the Chief of Orthopedic Service of ARABKIR Medical Center in Yerevan. He serves as the Advisor to the Minister of Health of the Republic of Armenia in Pediatric Orthopedics and Traumatology. He received his medical degree at Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi and completed his residency in pediatric orthopedics at the Pediatric University Hospital #1. Since the beginning of his career, he has been an active member of different associations such as the Association of Pediatric Surgeons and Anesthesiologists of Armenia, the Armenian Orthopedic Society, the European Pediatric Orthopedic Society (EPOS), and the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM). Along with his work, he also completed several professional training experiences abroad. More notably, he took part in a pediatric orthopedic spine surgery training course in Tampa, Florida at Shriners Hospital, a Clubfoot and DDH training and fellowship course at Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich, a hip sonography training and fellowship course in Austria, the Dega pre-meeting course organized by EPOS, the Ponseti training course in Iowa City, and a training course on neuro orthopedic diseases at the University Children’s Hospital in Basel. He is an author of more than thirty scientific articles publishes in local and international journals.
